This is a really wonderful French majolica bank in the form of a dirigible or blimp. The blimp is marked "Patrie" after the dirigible ordered by the French Minister of War in 1906 and named La Patrie. After travelling from Paris to Verdun in 1907 in seven hours, La Patrie was caught in a gale a few days later. The pilot was forced to descend. The wind, however, was so strong that 200 soldiers were unable to hold down the unwieldy craft and it was torn from their hands. It sailed away and went down in the North Sea. The bank stands 3 3/8" high and measures 5 1/4" x 2 1/2". It is in excellent condition with no chips. There is a fine hairline (3/4" long) running from the slot in the top (see close up), but it is stable.
