VICTORIAN Parkesine Bead Necklace, c1860-70s
This is a fabulous Victorian necklace, c. 1860s-70s. The beads are hand carved and made of either Parkesine or Xylonite - the very first plastics (Parkesine was developed in 1855 and Xylonite in the late 1860s). The hand carved, graduated, faceted beads are strung on a fine chain with a gold filled clasp. The beads are very dark wine red to the point of appearing black. Only when held to the light can you see the glint of red. The necklace measures 14 1/4" and is in excellent condition. The beads range in size from 6mm to 8mm.
