| This is a fabulous European 900 silver and guilloche enamel photo album or book, c. 1900. The front has a white guilloche enamel ground with swirls radiating from the center medallion and inlaid gold stars and dots above and below the medallion. The medallion has a black enamel ground with two guilloche enamel ladies dancing. The ladies' gowns have a lovely luminescence from the tight concentric circles of engraving under the enamel. The circles are only visible with magnification and do not extend into the black ground, but the effect on the gowns is wonderful. The back of the book is plain silver with no decoration. The book has a small catch and opens to space for four photos inside. It measures 1 3/4" x 2 1/2" and is in really excellent condition with no enamel loss or other damage. There is a very light scratch 1/4" long on the black enamel but this is only visible if you catch it in just the right light. The book has good weight (77 grams) and is marked on the back 900 (silver - sterling is 925) and has another mark that looks like a lyre. I have been told it is Romanian, but I have been unable to confirm this. Overall a very finely crafted piece in outstanding condition. | |||||||||
